Generally I think the Republicans can get away with these things because their voting block lets them. Their comments only offend liberals, the hardcore contards do not get offended by these remarks and actually like them. The people offended wont vote for them even if they weren't offended so why should they care?

Rush Limbaugh does it for ratings. Bat shit crazy sells and Rush is good at selling his name.

There is also the issue of the Republicans having no centeral leadership. No one wants to listen to any from the Bush administration because they're poisonous to even the Republicans now, and all the old stalwarts of the party are going or gone. Congresspeople are like children, if they aren't tended to strictly they go bonkers and fuck things up and act retarded. No one was watching the Republicans and they did exactly that, now they're pouting because they got into trouble.
