Default Best Video Game Ever Tourney

You know the drill. Pick 16 games that you think deserve to be considered as the best of all time. These games will be seeded by number of votes.

Things to consider:
  • Was the game influential? Has the game caused other similar games to be released? Has the game created a whole GENRE?
  • Does the game withstand the test of time? If the game is a few years old, a decade old, whatever, can you still pick it up, play it, and have fun?
  • Is the game fun? This shouldn't take much explaining, but some games are just damn fun and some aren't.
  • Replayability. This somewhat goes hand in hand with withstanding the test of time, but it has more to do with whether you would play a game a billion times or just once (rather than whether you would pick it up and play it in ten years or something).
  • Intangibles/favoritism/quirkiness/whatever: let's face it, some games just make you want to jizz your pants. However, don't go overboard with this. A game on your list should still rank well in the above qualities.

Things you should be careful about considering:
  • Graphics. Listen, I'm not saying you should dismiss them altogether, but be smart about it. Superman 64 has better graphics than Super Mario Kart (SNES), but I think we can all agree it is a worse game. However, if two games are from a similar era and one has better graphics (example: GTA IV compared to Saint's Row 2), you might feel that puts you over the top.
  • Don't pick games you've never played. I just would rather this be personal opinion rather than groupthink. Also, don't berate people because they don't have enough games from system X or system Y, some people have played more from certain systems than others. Hell, some people here are 16 or younger.
  • Is the game "long enough"? You have to be careful about this because a lot of games that are 10+ years old might be around the 10 hour long mark or so. It's similar to the graphics thing.
  • This can be up for debate, but I think we should group games from the same series together IF they are very similar. For example, I think we should just list Halo as one series and GTA III-IV as one series. However, I think we should put games from the same series that are dissimilar as single games, like NFL Blitz would be a different game from Blitz: The League. Again, we can put this up for debate. I put asterisks (*) next to games I think should be considered.

Feel free to ask questions/comment on other people's picks/comment on your own picks.

1. TMNT IV: Turtles in Time (SNES) - There were a million and one hack-n'-slashers back in that time, but I think this one reigns supreme. It had it all: awesome characters, awesome bosses, an awesome theme, awesome levels, and it's based on an awesome show. Oh, and the phrase, "Awww, shell-shock!" will probably be burned into my brain for all eternity.
2. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - There are plenty of good Mario games. I am even going to go so far as to include two on this list. I think this is the best though. The Tanooki suit is classic, the whole game is classic.
3. *NBA Jam (multiple consoles/arcade) - There aren't a whole lot of sports games that stand out to me as "classic." NBA Jam does. This game stands out to me as one that also revolutionized a genre: No real rules? Unrealistic physics? Turbo? Playing as The President or a gorilla? Sign me up! It caused a tidal wave of games still felt today: NFL Blitz, NHL Hitz, MLB Slugfest, Redcard, NBA Ballers, NBA Street, etc., etc.
4. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - Everything about this game kicks ass. The music, the characters, the weapons, the annoying fairy... okay, almost everything. Still, I'm thinking the franchise is still having trouble trying to recover the awesomeness that was Ocarina of Time.
5. Starcraft (PC and um, N64... sorta.) - I have a hard time putting it all into words, but this is just an extremely fun, extremely popular game. Tons of people still play it today. I think it deserves to be up here.
6. *GTA series (PS2, PS3, Xbox 360) - I'm not even a huge fan of this series, but I think it deserves to be up here anyway. People love the openness of the game, and of course being able to shoot people, set them on fire, beat a hooker, or whatever. It has led to several knockoffs, some of them good, others bad... or terrible.
7. Street Fighter II (multiple consoles/arcade) - I think it's fair to say that this game launched a ton of fighting games. What kid didn't want to shoot fireballs from his hand? And what dude still doesn't want to?
8. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) - I don't know what it is about this game. Sonic? Tails? The chaos emeralds turning you super saiyan? Spinning through a series of tubes? I don't know, but I fucking love this game.
9. Mario Kart 64 (N64) - The other Mario Kart games are good, but this one is closest to my heart. Red shells, blue shells, green shells, gold mushrooms, shortcuts. I love it.
10. *Super Smash Bros. series (N64, GC, Wii) - I think I picked up the original the first day it came out. It didn't let me down. The concept was wacky but it works out to be one of the coolest fighting games ever.
11. *Halo series (Xbawkz, Xbawkz 360) - There are plenty of shooters out there. Few are as popular as any of the Halo games. This was probably one of the first console shooters to be really popular as an online game.
12. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS) - I played this on the 360, but it was still pretty damn great. It stands out as one of the few great 2D side-scrollers in an ever-increasing 3D world.
13. Super Metroid (SNES) - Another game I was behind the curve on. It's a terrific game, and sets up a terrific idea for the Metroid Prime games, which are also terrific.
14. *Pokemon (GB) - Okay, you might think I'm going off the deep end. Maybe I have. The pokemon games weren't really revolutionary. However, the games were wildly popular and extremely fun. I think part of the fun was just playing friends/other jackasses and beating the shit out of them.
15. *Guitar Hero (multiple consoles) - We could probably debate this a lot, but I put Guitar Hero here instead of DDR because it appeals to a wider audience. I put GH here instead of Rock Band because it's basically the same idea.
16. Super Mario 64 (N64) - This was the first and, ironically, probably the best N64 title. It had a wide selection of levels (deserts, submarine levels, carpet rides, etc.). It also made me trip balls as a kid due to the fact that I had never moved a joystick with my thumb before. Now I use my thumb to play with my joystick all the time!

I think that's a decent list.

Diablo and Age of Empires are two possibilities. I'm actually surprised you didn't mention any Fallout title.

ITT: Justice actually posts something worthwhile!!!

I don't want to say these are in exact order, even tho they probably are. The first 10 are pretty much ranked in order

1. Resident Evil 2 (PS1, GC): I don't care what Fatal Frame or Silent Hill fanboys (also me) say. RE is the scariest Game Series ever. Also my favorite. The perfect mix of Adrenaline and "Strategery". Coolest Villains ever. I have beaten it more than 10 times, and I'm still willing to play it now

2. Grand Theft Auto 3 (Or Series) (PS2, Xbox): Don't ask me why, but this is still my all time Favorite GTA. The only thing missing is a talking Main Character, literally every other aspect of this game is beyond perfect. It changed the face of gaming.

3. Mortal Kombat II (Or series) (SNES, Genesis, Game Boy): If you think this game doesn't kick massive ass, you probably can't beat Kintaro, so it's okay.

4. Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (NES): Call me biased, but this is the coolest Link related game ever. I never got why everyone considered OOT the best. The Music, the extreme difficulty, and the overall construction of the game is just perfect, but yeah, it was the first game I kicked ass at, so I might be biased

5. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES): Tanooki's, and Frog Suits, and Koopalings, OH MY!!! C'mon, do I really have to explain?

6. Street Fighter II: the New Challengers (Or Series) (SNES, Genesis): I'll probably catch shit for ranking MK higher than this. But I honestly have no complaints about either of the two games. I think MKs bosses were more challenging (Even if Kintaro was fucking cheap), and the Characters are equal in likability. for some reason I found SFs levels slightly less cool than MKs, maybe that's why I rank it lower, because they're equal in every other aspect.

7. Super Metroid (or Series) (SNES): This game had just about everything. Perfect Levels, Bosses, Power-Ups, Music, a lovable main character. My only beef is the ending isn't as awesome as the rest of the game

8. Resident Evil 4 (GC, Wii, PS2): Some would say this is the best RE, but I think RE2 rules supreme, this is pretty close, tho. I really have no complaints about this game at all, but it wasn't ahead of its time or anything, so It's not as high as the 2nd one

9. Super Mario World (SNES): If you haven't played this game........ I'm just kidding, everyone and their mom has played this game. Not as awesome or original as 3, but still revolutionary

10. Goldeneye 007 (N64): Fuck Halo..... Motherfuck Halo. Seriously. Halo doesn't have shit on Goldeneye. This is the perfect shooter. Awesome Levels/Characters/Weapons/Music/ and most importantly, the most fun multiplayer mode you'll find on any shooter

11. Pac Man (PC, Arcade): You have to include it because it revolutionized games as we know them. It's not technically perfect, but it does have replay value... And we need at least one non console game on here!!!

12. Mega Man X (SNES): Mega Man always had the coolest bosses. What's better than kicking a mutant animal's ass and taking his powers. I would rank this game higher, but It'd be totally biased of me.

13. Tekken 3 (PS1): Probably the most likable characters of any fighting game, stunning graphics for the time, and kickass levels/Music. And for some reason being able to unlock fighters is just way cooler than having them all to begin with

14. Super Mario 64 (N64): I love these fucking levels!!! Plus Mario deserves props for not sucking in 3D

15. Fallout 3 (Xbox 360, PS3): Yeah. It's recent, but have you played the fucking thing?

16. Guitar Hero II (Or series) (PS2, Xbox 360): For some reason, the first just wasn't that great for me. GHII is the game that Myself, and every single one of my friends owned. even the Cheap, poor ones. The only reason it's ranked 16th is because it's very recent and I consider myself a mid old schooler

Here comes my Nintendo bias.

1. Super Mario 64 (N64) - My favorite game ever, never gets old.
2. Super Smash Bros Series (N64, GC, Wii) - Wonder how long I've spent playing these games..
3. Mario Kart 64 (N64) - Could still play for hours today.
4. Super Mario World (Snes) - One of the first Mario games I've played, and still stands as a favorite.
5. Super Mario Bros 3 (Nes) - Hard to argue.
6. Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - Growing up I found this game ridiculously hard, and still do. I remember people my age never shutting up about this game for months.
7. Goldeneye (N64) - Holy replay value.
8. Pokemon series (GB/GBA/DS) - The craze that Pokemon had over everyone I knew makes it hard to argue.
9. Halo series (Xbox/360) - Keeps nerds busy for hours/days. Not a huge fan myself but I understand why people love it so much.
10. GTA Series (PC, Xbox/360, Playstations) - Never been more fun to blast a niggaz head off.
11. Resident Evil Series (PS, GC) - If it's rated M on a nintendo system and was successful, that's reason enough.
12. Final Fantasy 7 (PS) - I've only played it briefly, and it was cool. Even though I didn't play it for long I knew it had to be included.
13. Metal Gear Solid Series (PS) - I suck at it and still enjoy it.
14. Doom (PC) - Revolutionary.
15. Guitar Hero series (Xbox/Playstations/Wii) - Looked for reasons to not put them on the list and couldn't think of any. So here it is.
16. Super Metroid (snes) - Almost forgot..

I liked Fallout 3 but not enough to put it on there. It has some glitches/bugs that make it annoying to play sometimes, and it's a very similar game to Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (in the way it plays, I mean).

I like the lists so far, keep 'em coming.

1. Half Life 2- Maybe the best first person shooter of all time. Combined a great Sci-Fi story with great characters and weapons. The Gravity gun may be the coolest weapon ever. This set the bench mark for what FPS should be.

2. GTA: San Andreas- IMO best game in the series. Gave you a whole state and 3 major cities to explore. Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas were represented by fictional names and looked like the actual cities. Main story took about 60 hours to complete and contained character improvement such as adding muscle or fat, getting haircuts, changing clothes etc. Great vehicles too such as jetpacks, planes and tanks. Engaging story made you want to finish.

3. Halo Series: Most popular online shooter for consoles and sold a shit load of copies. Solid story backed by great gameplay. Set a benchmark for online console shooters.

4. Metal Gear series: Great stories, memorable characters and some of the best boss fights in any video game.

5. The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind- Truly a great roleplaying game. Massive area to explore, thousands of NPCs to talk to and most importantly an epic main story. Main quest and side quests could take around 100+ hours to complete and you still wouldn't see all the game has to offer. Had 2 expansions that made to game ever longer and added things such as becoming a werewolf etc. Great weapons although combat was far from perfect, it is still one of the greatest RPGs ever.

6. Mario Series: I am not a fan of Mario but it has to make the list.

7. Madden Series: Love it or hate it, it is the best selling sports franchise ever. A sports game that consistently sells a lot of copies even if it has gotten a bit stale over the years.

8. Shemue 1 and 2: Never heard of these games? Then your missing out. A great action/adventure series for Dreamcast and xbox.(Shemue 2 only) An engrossing story that sadly was never finished but combat was solid as it was mostly kung fu style fighting. Has a huge fan base but the budget for Shenmue 3 which was supposed to finish the story was far too big to finance.

9. Pokemon Series: Was wildly popular and a fun game to play as a kid. Sold very well and is one of the best handheld games ever.

10. Goldeneye 64: One of the best and most fun shooters ever. Multiplayer was fantastically fun.

11. Bioshock: While it is a recent game there is no denying its awesomeness. Takes place in an underwater city known as rapture years after its hey day. What is left is a ruined city of what used to be a vibrant place. The use of plasmids to modify your body to shoot ice or fire or a swarm of bees out of your fists was awesome. Many different plasmids were available. Great atmosphere and story and chilling music set a great tone for this game. Bioshock 2 should be just as good.

12. Doom: One of the best PC games ever.

13. Mass Effect: Another recent game with an awaiting sequel. It is a great RPG that takes place in space. Amazing dialogue that effects the story depending on how you approach it. If you haven't played it you must.

14. Guitar Hero: Fun when it was fresh and new, now they are just milking the series. None the less a great series.

15. Fallout 3- Excellent graphics of post apocalyptic Washington DC. Seeing ruins of the Capitol building, Washington monument etc is chillingly awesome.

16. Portal- Great, great puzzle game. Forces you to think outside the box and is a pretty humor filled game. One of a kind game. The cake is a lie.

I think we should just keep series together to make it simpler. Even though we all have personal favorites amongst the series, they're all the same concepts.

I'm probably forgetting a lot, but here's mine. I'm not going to list the platforms, because most have a lot, or they're obvious which ones I'm talking about. No order.

Super Mario Bros.-An absolutely classic series. No explanation needed.

Grand Theft Auto-An extremely controversial series that changed gaming. The cheats added a ton of replayability as well.

Halo-Didn't have an Xbox, and wasn't a big fan of Halo 3, but there's no question this deserves to be in this list.

Starfox-Never owned the game, but always played it at friends and cousins' houses. Great replay value.

Pacman-I was never good at this game really, but it's still played a ton to this day.

NBA Jam
-Like Justice said, it inspired a bunch of later games to be made with the same concept. Traded Crystal Pony for this game.

MVP Baseball-Spent a full summer just playing MVP 2005. One of the best sports games of all time. The prospects and farm system depth was amazing, and it's a shame it's not made anymore.

Goldeneye 007-Great campaign, and possibly the best multiplayer game of all time. I loved the codes as well. Probably my favorite game of all time.

Mortal Kombat-Another controversial game which was my personal favorite of all the fighting series at the time. Nothing trumps fatalities.

Tekken-Never really liked the console games myself, but loved the arcade one. My second favorite of the fighting series.

Mario Kart-The best N64 game IMO, and probably my second favorite game of all time.

Pokemon-EVERYONE played this game, no matter how old you were. Too bad it expanded to 23423424 Pokemon, or however many they have these days.

Sonic-Can't decide which I like best, I even loved Sonic Spinball. Up there in my favorites.

Doom-Controversial, revolutionary, amazing multiplayer. Everything you can ask for in a video game.

Call of Duty-Great campaigns, incredible multiplayer. I've put over 15 days into COD4 online, so there's no way this doesn't make my list.

Tetris-Simple, but addicting. Played by everyone, and on basically anything with capable technology. Nothing beats seeing those giant rockets after completing an amazing game.

Honorable Mention:

X-Men-A personal favorite. These Genesis games were incredible to me, since I was a big X-Men fan. I forget which one was good and which sucked, but I had the one that sucked, so I was forced to play the good one everywhere but my house.

Altered Beast-Another personal favorite. Played it so much, it broke. Bought it again a few years back on Amazon, and still had fun playing it.

In some cases I agree and in others I don't. Like with the ones I have pointed out, specifically games like Guitar Hero, the concepts are extremely similar. I don't think games like Mario or Zelda should be necessarily put as one series for a couple reasons: 1. both series have multiple games that could hold their own in this tourney and 2. the concepts are different enough between games that they warrant being separate. I mean, SMB 3 and SM64 have pretty different objectives. If you changed Mario (and other Mario-related characters) in SM64 to a furry dog or something, I don't think anyone would be suing over it.

edit: how did you have Crystal's Pony Tale?

Yeah, I got what you mean. I don't care either way.

Got it as a joke kind of gift. The real question is how did my friend trade NBA Jam for it?

Suuuuuure. And yeah, good question, but he is not here for me to rag on so I guess it doesn't matter.

I found VC a tad harder to beat than III. I'm sure you used cheats to beat VC, tho. San Andreas' last mission was disappointingly easy to beat. IV was aiight.

I remember calling IV arguably the greatest game ever withing my first month of playing it, but it's not even the second coolest GTA to me now. You shouldn't even be qualified to rank until you've beat all of them. But I'm gay for III.

This thread makes me want to beat Resident Evil II again. It's almost orgasm status playing that game.

I didn't beat Vice City yet though. I'm on the mission with the fucking rock band and there is a bomb in their car and you have to keep driving, needless to say I suck at driving in those games....

I'm closer to beating VC than III though, III just down right pisses me off.

Edit: No cheat codes either.

I agree. I remember when I was around 4 years old and this game came out and my big brother borrowed it from a friend and brought it home to play for the first time. When I was younger, I used to love watching my siblings play video games so I just thought this would be another game that I'd enjoy watching, so he pops it in, I see a bunch of flames and shit and I'm like woah! cool! and at the time I did not know what zombies were then a little bit into the game a zombie pops outta no where and scares the shit out of me, I start screaming and it left me with a lifelong fear of zombies. LOL. I love the R.E series though. Leon kicks ass.

I'd be happy if a couple more people made lists. Partly so we have more and partly to give me time.

This list is in no particular order:

1. A Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past(SNES)

What I consider to be the best Zelda of all time. You can make your claims for Ocarina of Time, but I will always claim this as the best. From the start to the end I was fully immersed in this game. I still pick this game up and play a good bit.

2. Super Mario World (SNES)

This game got me hooked on video games. I've had alot of fun sitting there over the years playing through this game over and over and over.

3. The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowing (Xbox)

I'll go ahead and say this: This is my favorite game of ll time. I was never a fan of RPG's before picking this game up. I got so immersed in this world. In High school I played alot of basketball. What else did I do? Morrowind. So many days I'd show up dead ass tired to school from staying up to late playing this game.

*will finish list later

Hey jimmy, finish your list. Even if you have to phone it in.

I GIVE YOU ONE DAY!
