If Lane Kiffin's there to coach the kid, I'll be shocked.

This is stupid. Just like Berry's brother committing at this age. I didn't read the article, but did Lane Kiffin get quoted as offering to the kid. I wonder if it is a publicity stunt by the kids school.
Pretty sure you can't even talk to recruits until junior year based on my experiences...this is bs. Also I could verbally commit to any school if I wanted to. You still have to be accepted and go through the application process which this kid won't be doing for another 5 years
^^^^ completely wrong. There is nothing that says you can't contact someone in middle school. You can't contact a HS freshman or soph, but a middle school kid is fine. Also, you can't verbally committ until you have a scholarship offer, which this kid does. So basically...yeah everything you said is wrong.
He doesn't have a written scholarship offer which is all that matters - and that can't be offered until the kid is in September of his Junior year, I think. Kiffin just told him, I want you to play for me! I don't think they've even met though. The kid is just saying he wants to play for USC, it's his dream school.
I don't understand the whole story though.

My question is how can you possibly know if this kid is going to be THAT good. Ignorant question obviously since I've never seen him play, but I still don't see how you'd be able to grade a 13 year old that high. He must really have an arm.
Well he obviously clearly stood out from the kids in his age group. It's still a big gamble, because so much can change from now until 5 years from now when he's a senior.

You can just withdraw the scholarship if he doesn't pan out. There's really no risk from USC and commitments mean nothing at all.

Actually thats the key to this. Kiffin is now the goto guy for any QB this coach has in the future. The Clausens and Barkleys will all be at USC from now on as long as Kiffin treats this guy well.
