Why do Republicans have a monopoly on these sorts of things
This is a general thing I have been wondering for a long time. Just in the last few weeks, a Republican Senator (Jim DeMint) says that the U.S. under Obama is like Germany under Hitler, a Republican congresswoman (Michelle Bachman) says that the census will be used to bring back something like the internment of Japanese people, a Republican state legislator (in Arizona) says that the earth is 6000 years old, a view that a Republican governor (Sarah Palin) holds, a Republican congressman (Steve King) casts the lone vote against commemorating slavery's role in the construction of our capital, a Republican Senator (Jefferson Sessions) supports a coup in Honduras, a Republican radio anchor (Rush Limbaugh) advocates for a coup in America, a Republican news anchor (Brian Kilmeade) advocates his desire for a racially "pure" society, a Republican congressman (Mark Kirk) says to Chinese officials that he thinks the United States is lying about its budget numbers, thus undermining the US's relations with China, a Republican secretary of defense (Rumsfeld) admitted to breaking geneva conventions, the vice-chair of the Young Republicans thought it was funny to call Obama a "mad coon," a "terrorist," a "communist," etc. And that is all literally just in the last couple of weeks and off the top of my head. And then, of course, one could devote pages to Palin and Sanford's recent kerfuffles.
My question is, ideology aside, why do you think it is that Republicans seem to have four of these types of controversies for every one that Democrats have? Sure, Democrats do these types of things from time to time (see California assembly speaker Karen Bass saying that her opponents were "terrorists" and didn't deserve free speech), but why is it that these sorts of events, which seem like they should be completely unrelated to party affiliation, only happen to one party these days? Does it have to do with the fact that there's a lower threshold to become a prominent figure in a smaller, more extreme party? Is it just a byproduct of a party that was built from a coalition that included religious fundamentalists and racists as major components?

I think because the Republican Party is a party of fear and greed. They love to make Americans scared of every other country out there. If they could find a reason on why we needed to invade Switzerland, they would.
It's all propaganda and corruption that breeds into fear. What all of that adds up to is money. That's what it's really all about. Money. A large defense budget puts lots of money into large conservative companies in the private sector, and we all know how that is just a large revolving door.
I know that a lot of Republican leaders say they don't support gay marriage and are big Christian supporters, etc, but I honestly don't believe they give two shits about any of that. It's just that they know there is a large audience that believe in things like that and they play to what those people want to hear to stay in power and in return, make money.
"They are a minority party. Except they're not even a party, they're a mindset. They don't like this group and they don't like that group. it could be sex, it could be race, it could be religion. They're just filled with dislike."
Gore Vidal on Real Time with Bill Maher.
This is not a party that wants to solve anything. They just want to get elected. They're able to do so because of people's irrational dislike of certain groups. They like to disguise anti-gay rhetoric as "family values." They want to disguise wanting to get into your personal life by being "anti-drug" and "pro-national-security."

Aside from what other people said, they're just sore losers. They cant handle losing.... 2 terms of Bush was the best thing to ever happen to the Democratic Party. He's our version of Reagan. They Put Liberals down for things like Protesting and conspiracy theories, yet when they're down, they use even more extreme methods than even the whackyest of Liberals.... Their fundamentals our outdates. It happened to the whigs, and now it's starting to happen to them.
Generally I think the Republicans can get away with these things because their voting block lets them. Their comments only offend liberals, the hardcore contards do not get offended by these remarks and actually like them. The people offended wont vote for them even if they weren't offended so why should they care?
Rush Limbaugh does it for ratings. Bat shit crazy sells and Rush is good at selling his name.
There is also the issue of the Republicans having no centeral leadership. No one wants to listen to any from the Bush administration because they're poisonous to even the Republicans now, and all the old stalwarts of the party are going or gone. Congresspeople are like children, if they aren't tended to strictly they go bonkers and fuck things up and act retarded. No one was watching the Republicans and they did exactly that, now they're pouting because they got into trouble.
