The Atlanta Hawks have seemed to be one step behind this summer, as they’ve waited longer to come to terms with their own than other clubs around the league have. Josh Childress let it be known that be wanted to sign a deal early in the summer, but nothing was made of it. The result? Greece.
Now, they face a new dilemma, although this time, they have some say. Hawks restricted free agent forward Josh Smith has signed a five-year, $58 million offer sheet with the Memphis Grizzlies. Atlanta will have seven days to match the offer. Should Hawks management choose to match, Smith will remain in Atlanta. If not, the highflyer will join Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo, Mike Conley, and co. in Memphis, where they would undoubtedly have one of the most athletic and exciting groups in the league this coming season.
UPDATE: In the blink of an eye, Atlanta has chosen to match the offer, keeping Smith in a Hawks uniform until the summer of 2013.
